If you're feeling out of sorts or simply need a lift, think about shiatsu. This Oriental treatment is more than a relaxing massage-it is actually therapeutic and can be used to treat a variety of conditions.
Shiatsu is a system of bodywork that has its origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It works on unblocking and moving the ki (essential energy) along the meridians in the body. The shiatsu therapist applies pressure to acupuncture points (known as tsubos) to enhance the flow of this vital life energy.
Shiatsu literally means ‘finger pressure'. The shiatsu therapist uses thumbs, elbows and sometimes knees to apply firm, gentle pressure to the body along the meridians, releasing blockages to create good energy flow. All the meridians connect into the hara (abdomen), and a shiatsu therapist will, through systematic palpation, make an assessment about your health and energy needs.
First the therapist looks for signs of jitsu (excess ki) and kyo (deficient ki). When kyo is present, the body feels spongy, empty and lacks tone, whereas jitsu feels hard and tense with a feeling of fullness.
The therapist adjusts the treatment by sedating the jitsu energy or toning the kyo in order to restore balance to the body. The emphasis on creating balance along the meridians is what makes shiatsu more than just a body massage. It works on the underlying energetic relationship between the meridians and the organs, which govern wellbeing and health.
A shiatsu treatment generally lasts for 45min $75. When choosing a therapist, make sure they are registered with a relevant association. Both the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia (STAA) and the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) have databases of qualified practitioners on their websites (see details below). Currently, the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia (STAA) has a membership of around 300 and is active in maintaining quality standards in the levels of training and practice in the health industry.
Shiatsu has enjoyed a long history and has been recognised in Japan as an approved paramedic specialty since 1964. It has been practised in Australia for 25 years and clients throughout the world have sung its praises. In 1997, a study of the work of six shiatsu therapists revealed that clients greatly benefited from their treatment. These benefits ranged from complete pain relief to improvements in stamina, strength, immune status and long-term chronic conditions.
No matter what your ailment, a shiatsu treatment will create an immediate sense of wellbeing, which can increase over several days as the ki flows through the body. In other words, you'll feel rejuvenated!
With regular shiatsu, along with exercise and a healthy diet, you'll feel on top of the world.
